Why I choose Non-Toxic Living and why ‘Young Living’ is my product of choice.
I achieved my first Aromatherapy certificate in 1998, long before essential oils were trendy. At the time I did not find an essential oil that really spoke to me. I certainly fell in love with the concept and understanding that essential oils are a natural plant derivative that is complementary to our health and wellbeing. I simply did not fall in love with an oil company, and the passion waned. Fast forward 20 years, and numerous kids, interstate moves, and mortgages later, it has been a long time! But I once again started hearing about essential oils and that flame was ignited. I came across a brand that had strong marketing skills and bought two of their oils. Yuk! Headaches, itchy throat, and feeling very unwell when I diffused it in the diffuser, I bought from a large retail candle and smelly shop. I had essentially made up my mind that I just could not use essential oils. I mentioned this to a lady I had received a Reiki session from, “well, try these” and she showed me the Young Living oils.
I went away, mulled on it (briefly), then met up with my friend the next day, and I was hooked! It has been 4 and a half years now. I am still loving all the products and with over 600 exceptional products to choose from, how could I not be? For me, there is a pureness about Young Living Essential oils (YLEO) that I instinctively responded to and had an immediate engagement with. I now use YLEO products every day on myself, my family, and my two fur babies.

What makes YL different?
With everyday products such as deodorant, shampoo and body care products, NingXia Red® for anti-oxidants, and natural make-up needs, all my personal needs are covered. Knowing that each time I use an everyday essential, I don’t even have to think about harmful, toxic, or potentially dangerous chemicals lurking in the products because I know the Young Living team has done it for me – Young Living have no hidden ingredients, no scary safety data sheets, and any smell is an essential oil, not a ‘fragrance’ created in a laboratory.
I personally have been above the wellness line ever since using YLEO.
Of course, there are other suppliers of essential oils on the market, so what makes YL different. In my experience I have found the integrity, transparency and total support from YL has been incomparable to other companies. Being a blind user of the YL system, various issues arose. The YL team have been quick to respond, quick to modify and flexible enough to offer support when they can’t modify.
Seed to Seal Promise
The above infographic shows how YL’s meticulous practices for planting, cultivating, harvesting, and distilling yield potent, naturally beneficial essential oils that surpass the industry-leading standards.
The dedication to sustainable and ethical growing and harvesting processes is a positive aspect of YL that gives me peace of mind. I know I am using a product of quality and dealing with a company of integrity.
Furthermore, Young Living supports local growers of plants essential to the oil production, just like the Blue Cypress farm in Darwin, Australia.
My favourite part is that if YL can’t grow it and process it or purchase it from quality vendors with the Seed to Seal promise, it is not supplied.

I’m new to essential oils. How are they used?
Each bottle of Young Living essential oil is labelled with directions for use. Please consult with the product label for appropriate use. My team is dynamic and very eager to share what we know. We have many resources to enhance your new young Living essential oil lifestyle.
I see the term “carrier oil” used in several places. What is a carrier oil, what does it do, and why should I use it?
A carrier oil is a viscous solution such as coconut oil or grapeseed oil that can be used to dilute and carry essential oils. Young Living V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex is an excellent carrier oil for all applications. Carrier oils ensure that EOs applied topically are comfortable for the skin. Dilution with a carrier oil does not dilute the effect of the EO, and prevents waste due to excessive application. Please note, vegetable shortening, butter, margarine or petroleum derivatives (petroleum jelly) should never be used as carrier oils. Some consumers choose to avoid olive oil as a carrier oil because of its strong aroma and thick viscosity. There are many options for carrier oil including; Hemp oil, Wheatgerm, Almond, Avocado. Each carrier oil has its own benefits, however V6 or a fractionated coconut are great first choices.
What is a hot oil?
“Hot oils” are oils that, when applied to the skin, may cause a hot or burning sensation. YL recommends using a patch test procedure prior to first use. To perform a patch test, apply 1 drop of essential oil to a patch of skin such as the forearm. Observe that area of skin over the course of an hour for any noticeable reaction; usually reactions occur within 5-10 minutes. If you experience a hot or burning sensation or if you develop a rash, add V-6™ carrier oil to the affected area as often as needed. Using carrier oil will dilute whereas water may not be as effective. Examples of “hot” oils include cinnamon bark, clove, lemongrass, peppermint, oregano, thyme and Thieves®. A different lid is often an indicator of an ‘hot’ essential oil but please do not hesitate to contact me if you are unsure.
What if I experience skin discomfort or irritation?
Stop using the essential oil, and apply V-6 or another carrier oil to the affected area. Never use water in an attempt to flush the oil off the skin, as this may increase discomfort.
If a rash occurs this may be a sign of detoxification; drink adequate water to encourage the release and removal of body toxins.
Toxins present in petrochemical based soaps and skin care products, detergents and perfumes may trigger some of the detoxification reactions. Consider discontinuation of these agents if a reaction occurs.
Before using the triggering essential oil again, perform a patch test (see above) and dilute with carrier oil as needed.
If an essential oil gets in your eye, flush with V-6 carrier oil (do not use water, as water drives oil into the skin and the eyes) to alleviate any discomfort. Discomfort should be alleviated within seconds. If eye discomfort does not subside within 5 minutes, please seek medical attention.
Be aware that some documents suggest diluting the oil with water. YL suggests that you dilute with carrier oil to ensure that discomfort is alleviated as quickly as possible.
How does exposure to sun affect essential oil use?
Some essential oils, particularly citrus oils, contain natural molecules that may react with sunlight (UV light) and cause a sensitivity reaction. All YL essential oils and oil blends that contain these compounds are labelled with a warning to avoid sun/UV light for 12 to 48 hours after applying.
Caution should always be used when starting to use a new oil: use patch testing (see above), dilute and apply the oil to skin that is protected from sun/UV exposure to reduce the risk of sensitivity.
YL beauty and cosmetic products are formulated to remove sun-sensitising agents to reduce the risk of sun sensitivity.
Can essential oils be applied to sensitive areas?
YL recommends that you avoid contact with EOs and sensitive areas such as eyes, ears, genitals and mucous membranes. If you choose to use the oil in any sensitive area, dilute 1 drop of the essential oil to 5-10 drops of V-6 carrier oil.
How often can essential oils be applied? How much do I use?
Proper usage is indicated on each essential oil label. Please follow label instructions. The idea of “if a little is good, a lot is better” is not always correct. Essential oils are very potent and powerful– start low and go slow. In most cases 1-2 drops are adequate and using more may waste product. Depending on the EO you can gradually build up to 3-4 uses per day if desired.
Excessive use of essential oils may increase the risk for adverse reactions.
Can essential oils be used during pregnancy or while nursing?
As with any medical condition it is strongly recommended that, prior to use of essential oils, you seek the advice and recommendation of a competent, trained health care advisor who is experienced in the use of essential oils. It is generally recommended to avoid overuse and excessive use of Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea), Sage (Salvia officinalis), Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare), Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis), Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), and Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) as well as the blends and supplements that contain these oils.
Contact me for Safety Data Sheets that may assist you when pregnant.
Can essential oils be used on children?
Many essential oils are appropriate for use with children, but they should be diluted prior to use.
The KidScents® range is specifically formulated for use with children and pre-diluted for ease of use. Children generally respond well to essential oils, and use of a carrier oil is recommended. One-2 drops of an essential oil such as RutaVaLa™, Gentle Baby™, and Peace & Calming® may be diluted in carrier oil and applied to the bottom of the feet to assist in sleep habits.
Always follow the directions on the bottle and any associated safety instructions when considering the use of essential oils on your little ones.
What about the use of essential oils if I have a medical condition? Can essential oils interact with prescription medications?
If you have a medical condition, or if you are using prescription medication, it is recommended that you consult with a health advisor who has experience with essential oils prior to using an essential oil.
Seek the advice of the prescribing physician and a pharmacist about potential interactions between the medication(s) and the essential oil(s).
In this instance, the Household Cleaner or personal Care products may be a beginning option for you.
